Henry Newell Guernsey

Henry Newell Guernsey
1817-1885

was born on February 10, 1817 in Rochester, Vermont.

In 1842 he completed his medical studies at New York University, and was later awarded the chair of obstetrics at the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadadelphia. Guernsey was in charge of the gynecological clinic, from which he gained extensive clinical experience.

A dedicated follower of Boenninghausen, Guernsey is said to have been one of the most important homeopaths in 19th century America.

Based on Boenninghausen's idea of the “genius of a remedy,” he developed the system of remedy “keynotes.” This concept describes the combination of symptoms that decisively describes what is distinctive in a remedy, its unique aspect.
Guernsey died of tuberculosis in 1885.
